Josie’s Advice for Parents

josie1This is the page where I get to talk to the parents. My budgie mom who is helping write this page, is not a vet, but has had budgies all of her life.

What do I need to know about buying a budgie?

Buying from a reputable breeder will help to reduce problems that might be missed in a pet store.  You can also adopt a budgie from an exotic bird sancuary (ie Grey Haven).  Breeders are experts in budgies, their care and feeding.  When you get a budgie take it to an avian vet for a check up.  My mom did  that with me and I seem to be OK

How old should my child be before we get a budgie?

If you have never had a budgie, 8 years old is a good time to start with budgies.  They are fragile,  require attention, stimluation and careful handling.

How old should a budgie be when we adopt it as a pet?

It depends on if you want a baby budgie, they sould be 8 weeks old.  you can adopt an adult budgie and they can be any age.

Should we get budgies it we have other pets in the home?

You should be very careful.  Dogs and cats have a hunter instinct, so we cannot come out when they are around. I really don’t care to be dinner.

Should we get on budgie or more than one?

You can have one budgie but we do prefer having a friend, we are flock animals and like company.

Should we get males, females or one of each?

You can have male or females.  Two males are fine together. Two females will not get along too well.  One of each is just fine.

How can we make sure budgies will get along with each other and not fight?

Like humans you can never be sure if budgies will get along and not fight.   Don’t expect too much from us as we are creatures of instinct.

How many cages should we get?

You can keep us in one cage, I prefer having my own.  We do not always get along and sometimes have to be separated.

What if we don’t want baby budgies?

Keep us occupied and please no nesting boxes.  That will trigger a mating reflex.  I am bonded to my guardian it is possible I would lay eggs for her.  Please see the links for further information
